A NEW VOICE

We are a growing coalition of Canadian music creators who share the common goal of having our voices heard about the laws and policies that affect our livelihoods. We are the people who actually create Canadian music. Without us, there would be no music for copyright laws to protect.

Until now, a group of multinational record labels has done most of the talking about what Canadian artists need out of copyright. Record companies and music publishers are not our enemies, but let's be clear: lobbyists for major labels are looking out for their shareholders, and seldom speak for Canadian artists. Legislative proposals that would facilitate lawsuits against our fans or increase the labels' control over the enjoyment of music are made not in our names, but on behalf of the labels' foreign parent companies.

April 30, 2006
Press Conference at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern Monday, May 1
The announcement of the Canadian Music Creators Coalition has generated enormous global interest with dozens of media requests and worldwide press coverage. Since the Coalition stated its positions on copyright law and cultural policy, an incredible array of Canadian musicians has joined the CMCC.

In response, CMCC members, including Barenaked Ladies, Broken Social Scene, Andrew Cash and others, will hold a press conference to announce the identity of the latest Canadian musicians to speak out in their own names. They will shed light on their decision to speak for themselves, their concerns about copyright law and cultural policy and their demands for a face-to-face meeting with government Ministers responsible for these issues.

Many thanks to all the supporters who have asked about attending. However, the May 1st event is intended to be a press conference, so we would like to limit attendance to journalists/bloggers. We hope to have a more public event for supporters of the Coalition soon. We appreciate your support!
